We both know what it’s like to move to a new country without knowing anyone, receiving any kind of benefit, and starting from scratch. That experience describes our beginnings in the United States.
Eduardo was born in Redwood City to immigrant parents. His dad worked as a garbage collector and his mom was a part-time school crossing guard. At age 5, Ed and his family relocated to Jalisco, Mexico, where they lived for 10 years until they moved back to California. Returning to his country of origin was a culture shock for Ed! He had to relearn his native language (English) while trying to finish high school. His dad started working in janitorial services, and the entire family often helped him clean offices. Ed got a job as a grocery store bagger, which helped him interact with the locals, overcome the language barrier, and finish high school. He eventually graduated cum laude from San Jose State with a degree in business accounting—a dream come true. After graduation, Ed built a career in real estate and loans, eventually starting his own brokerage.
Lizzeth, on the other hand, was born in Mexico. Her family’s comfortable life there was shaken during the financial crisis in the early '90s and they lost everything. They moved to Northern California when she was 9, hoping to start a new and prosperous life, yet they had no family, friends, or resources there to support them. At such a young age Lizz not only had to learn a foreign language and assimilate to a new culture. She also became a translator for her parents to help them navigate in a new country. Both of her parents went from professionals to working in the service and maintenance industries. However, they were determined to provide her and her brother with a better life. They worked tirelessly to set an example and always made sure their children focused on the pursuit of higher education. Our paths crossed when Lizz entered high school and met Julissa, a young and inspiring teacher she connected with. This teacher also happened to be Ed’s sister. As high school graduation approached for Lizz and she looked forward to starting college at San Jose State, Ed was looking for an assistant and Julissa introduced them. Lizz started working for Ed, in what was supposed to be a temporary entry-level position. But Ed became a mentor, teaching her about loan processing and, eventually, real estate. This opened a world of possibilities that Lizz had never envisioned herself in. Lizz took this opportunity and turned what was supposed to be an entry-level position into a partnership. This is how our journey and joint purpose to help our community was born.
We’ve been a team for over 21 years now! One of the qualities we share is our empathy, understanding and drive to help the immigrant community. We both know what it’s like to come to a new country with little, if any, resources and not fully understanding the language. Immigrants and those who don’t fit the cookie-cutter prototype in the eyes of banks, loan officers, and other institutions need extra support. We show our clients that homeownership is 100% possible—whether you’re a business owner, self-employed, or someone who doesn’t fit the traditional mold –– treating them with the respect and care they deserve.
